This one doesn’t need much explaining.
Nike took one of New York’s most familiar subway regulars and worked the idea into the Air Force 1 ’01. The result is the College Grey and Pink Glaze colorway, a pair that has quickly picked up the nickname “Subway Rat.”
The upper is covered in hairy College Grey suede, giving the shoe a rougher texture than the usual clean leather Air Force 1. Pink Glaze shows up underneath and in smaller details, adding just enough contrast without turning the concept into a costume.
That balance is what makes the shoe work. The inspiration is obvious once you know the story, but from a distance it still looks like a wearable grey-and-pink AF1.
The ’01 Shape Matters Here
Nike used the Air Force 1 ’01 build for this release, bringing back the slimmer toe box and the more substantial, nostalgic construction associated with that version. On a shoe this textured, the cleaner shape helps keep everything from feeling too busy.
Shervarino Take
There’s a lot Nike could have done with a subway-rat theme, and it would have been easy to push it too far. Instead, the design stays pretty restrained: grey texture, pink contrast and an ’01 silhouette that already has plenty of character.
It’s playful without becoming a novelty shoe. And for an Air Force 1, that may be the best part.
